What makes EVLT the best option?
It is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that uses fewer injections, less local anesthesia, and has a quick recovery time.
How does ELVeS work?
During the procedure, Dr. Heird will map the varicose vein utilizing an ultrasound. A thin laser fiber will be inserted into the vein. Laser light will be emitted through the fiber, and the laser energy will close the vein. As the faulty vein closes, blood flow will be re-routed to the surrounding healthy veins.
How long does the procedure take?
The entire process takes about 45 minutes and is performed right in your physician’s office.
Is there pain involved?
Most patients feel no pain, though some experience minimal discomfort. Slight bruising may also occur. Any pain that is felt can be treated with non-prescription pain medication, as needed. *The procedure is proven highly effective with outstanding patient satisfaction.
What are the risks?
One of the greatest advantages of endovenous laser treatment is that the risks are so minimal. A local anesthetic and a minor entry point for the laser fiber limits the side effects to possible, slight bruising. Patients can resume normal everyday activities, except for strenuous exercise, immediately after the procedure.
How soon will I see results?
With the ELVes procedure, relief of your varicose vein symptoms occurs immediately.

Will my insurance cover the procedure?
Most insurance companies cover the procedure, and AVLC can assist in checking your specific coverage.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment that involves injecting a solution into the vein. The solution causes the vein walls to swell, stick together, and seal shut. The flow of blood stops, and the vein turns to scar tissue. This treatment does not require anesthesia. Sclerotherapy is less effective on larger veins, and has a higher recurrence rate.
Can I maintain my normal level of activity after the ELVeS procedure?
Yes. We want you to maintain your normal level of activity. We strongly discourage lying down and/or lounging. We encourage walking as it is extremely beneficial. If lounging, elevate your legs above the level of your heart.
Can I continue going to the gym?
Yes, with some exceptions. The treadmill, elliptical, low impact aerobics, and low weight repetitions are allowed. No heavy weight lifting or high impact aerobics for one week. General rule – if it makes your face red, don’t do it for at least one week.
Do I have to elevate my legs after the procedure, and if so, for how long?
It is only important to elevate your legs (above the level of your heart) if you are going to be stationary for a while. Walking is very good. If you are going to be sitting for a while, your legs should be elevated as much as possible for the first week after the procedure. You do not have to sleep with your legs elevated.
How long do I have to wear compression stockings after the procedure?
You must wear compression stockings for the first 24 hours after the procedure. After that, you should continue to wear them for the next 7 – 10 days at all times, except when sleeping.
Will I see the doctor on the day of my Ultrasound?
No. You will be given a separate date to return and review the results of your ultrasound with Dr. Heird. Plans for future treatment options will be discussed at that time, as well as answers to any questions you may have.
