5 Misconceptions about venous disease

Varicose veins are a venous insufficiency disease that cause veins to become swollen, twisted, and often times painful. This occurs when the veins have become damaged and cannot properly circulate blood throughout the body’s system. Varicose veins are many times found in the legs, but can appear almost anywhere in the body.

Over 30 million people suffer from vein conditions. There are many misconceptions regarding vein disease. Below are some of the most common myths.

#1: Varicose veins are easily seen.
Unfortunately, varicose veins are not always visible to the naked eye. They can sometimes be deep under the skin and only detectible with an ultrasound. Although they are not visible, they can still cause leg cramps, swelling, and tired or achy legs.

#2: Varicose veins are only a cosmetic issue
While varicose veins can be an unsightly, aesthetically unpleasing condition, they are far from being just a cosmetic problem. Venous conditions are often accompanied by aching, throbbing, swelling, cramping, etc. If left untreated, they can lead to more serious conditions.

#3: Only people who cross their legs, or pregnant women are susceptible to varicose veins
There are many factors that can lead to venous conditions. Pregnancy and long periods of sitting can lead to varicose veins, but there are more factors. Included are genetics, diet, and lack of exercise.

#4: The only way to fix varicose veins is through painful surgery.
This could not be further from the truth thanks to advancements in medicine. At one time, the only option was to have the veins surgically removed while under general anesthesia – known as vein stripping. Today, Laser Ablation and Sclerotherapy are among the most popular treatments. Both provide safe, easy, and effective treatment options for varicose vein sufferers.

#5: Treatment options are very expensive
Many insurance plans cover varicose vein treatments. We recommend sitting down with your AVLC physician to go over the many factors when decided the course of action to take.
